Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today announced a partnership with Christie’s to auction a stunning, gold lacquer-painted 78” Curved UHD TV. The beautiful piece combines innovative technology with intricate design, and will be on public display during the preview of Christie’s Hong Kong autumn auction beginning on November 20. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Orbis, a global non-government organization (NGO) with the mission to improve access to high-quality eye health.
“The Samsung Curved UHD TV is an artistic creation, but this collaboration with Sung Yong Hong elevates it to a true work of art,” said KK Park, Executive Vice President and head of Sales & Marketing, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics.” The TV is the centerpiece of every home, and we are excited to share this work of art with the clients of Christie’s Hong Kong. TV is a part of all cultures and we hope that everyone can enjoy watching it. We are also very proud to support Orbis, as they work towards the prevention and treatment of the causes of avoidable blindness.”
Hong was commissioned by Samsung for his expertise in Ottchil, a Korean lacquer painting technique that dates back to the Neolithic Era, and for his ability to apply a traditional art form onto modern materials. Just as it was once used to preserve valuable ancient artefacts, Hong’s use of Ottchil was deliberate and symbolic – to preserve those cherished moments of entertainment that TV delivers.
The cutting-edge TV was designed by Korean artist, Sung Yong Hong in connection with the theme, “Memory of TV.” It features iconic scenes that the television shares with the public, which are brought to life through intricate gold-lacquered paintings on the TV’s rear face.
“We are always looking for distinct premium pieces, and Samsung has truly delivered with its one-of-a-kind artisan Curved UHD TV,” said Eric Chang, Deputy Chairman of Christie’s Asia. “The design is breathtaking, and we are excited to present such a unique product – our first-ever home electronics product for auction – to our valued guests and clients.”
The one-off Curved UHD TV will be displayed among other art by leading Asian artists at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, West Wing Hall, beginning November 20.
