Telenor Wants Former Indian Subsidiary Chairman to Resign from Company

Norway’s Telenor has asked the former Chairman of its Indian subsidiary Unitech Wireless, Sanjay Chandra to resign from the Board of Directors while he defends himself from corruption charges relating to the country’s 2008 telecoms license scandal.

Although Sanjay Chandra stepped down from the role of Chairman after the charges were filed, he remained on the Board, even though he is still in jail after being denied bail by the Judge investigating the scandal.

Telenor brought a majority 67.25% stake in the company after it had been granted the now controversial GSM licenses.

“We have simply asked Sanjay to step down from the board until the ongoing trial is concluded since we believe it is the appropriate thing to do,” a Telenorspokesperson told media.
